Last night's dream, or at least, the dream I was having when I woke up, involved visiting the house that my grandparents lived in when I was a little kid, and also the actor Alan Cumming having decided to be a woman instead of a man. I wouldn't be completely surprised if that was the case, but a quick visit to his website shows that it hasn't happened yet, at least.
Night before last I dreamed that my pregnant co-worker is going to have a girl. I told a couple people at work, but not her, as I didn't want to be right and spoil things or be wrong and be disappointing. Plus, even if she does want to find out when she can, that's still a couple months away. Anyway.
Lost premiered last night, and as promised, the first five minutes were especially wtf-worthy. The fact that two different Stephen King books popped up is still tugging at my mind, but given that they were the old covers, I can't tell what books they were. A lot of folks have been suggesting that they're part of the Dark Tower series and everyone knows that King is interested in the show because he's written a couple commentaries on it, and allowed them to reference his work. Not to mention the little rumor that's floating around that he was the real author of Bad Twin, the book that the franchise released last summer... It's an interesting thought, at least, though I don't like the implications of a Lost/Dark Tower parallel. (cough)
Oh, and of the three of us, I was the one to guess correctly on the new station's name--"The Hydra." Go me. The whole Juliet/Sarah/Penny thing is irritating because the actresses haven't been around long enough, screen-time wise, for us to differentiate, and they've all become significant in the last two episodes--the last of Season 2 and the first of Season 3. Also, Ben. If that's his real name--given that I wouldn't be entirely surprised if it's another alias. And dude, is Mr. Friendly gay? "You're not my type, Kate." Eheheheh.
I know the six-week miniseries (first section of the season, then they break for a couple months and come back until the real end of the season) is supposed to focus on the Others, but I'm just dying to know what's going to happen with Michael and Walt, and what's going to happen on the other side of the island. Next week's promo looked promising, at least, for a look at them. Here's hoping.
As I carry on into my second week of the schedule of a Completely Normal Person (aka 9-5, Monday-Friday), it becomes apparent that I really don't have too much interesting happen to me during the week. I am, however, getting more accustomed to the 5/2/5/2/etc vibe so that I'm not totally exhausted from working it. I knew I was capable of it because I did it for several months before the wedding. It's especially good to be back to something that approaches regularity in scheduling. The manager who makes the schedule now, D, implied that next week would be more of the same if he could manage it. I'm good with that.
I think I've figured out that 11:30 is just about the perfect time for me to fall asleep. The problem with sleeping a little before or a little after that is that I tend to wake up in REM, which results in a feeling of a crappy night's sleep. So aiming for 11:30 should do it--right after Good Eats, which is as good as anything to fall asleep to, don't you think?
Tonight brings with it the promise of more frustration and yelling and the pulling out of hair as LOST embarks upon Season 3 tonight. Evan and I have (more or less, skipping some episodes in the middle) caught up by watching the second season and bonus discs from the DVD set. We're gluttons for punishment, of course, but it's also a chance to collect my best friend J on the way home from work and drag her over for some amusement, as it was last year that we became accustomed to all sitting down together and watching. I'm sure I'll find a few people to scream, "They're Dharma!" about (as I am wont to do), and then we'll probably watch the Project Runway reunion show. Hee. Like old times~
Had a small bit of happiness yesterday as I was scanning all our audio books to see what was old and needed to be sent back. One of the titles was the compilation of short stories edited by James Patterson that came out recently, called Thriller. I didn't think it would be something I would be particularly interested in when it came out, but to my surprise, one of the authors listed on the cover as a contributor was none other than Katherine Neville, author of my much-beloved The Eight. So I grabbed the actual book on my way to lunch (actually, on my way to covering the lunch of my dallying co-worker, who took at least forty-five minutes if not an hour, instead of thirty) and skimmed. It appears that we shouldn't give up hope of Neville publishing again, since the story she included for the volume, The Tuesday Club, is part of or relevant to the sequel she's planning for everyone's favorite cult classic.
It's good to know that there's something still in the works, though since it's been almost twenty years since the original was published, I'm curious how much her writing has changed, either for the better or for the worse. It's entirely possible that her style is such that it just won't be the same, but for what it's worth, the story was good, if a bit short--she needs a lot of room for setup and delivery, though, and I don't mind that. So I'll have to keep my eyes open, because now she's caught my eye.
That's enough for now, I think, and it's about time I got ready for the halfway day. Until next time~
What TV show(s) will you be watching this season? Why?
Submitted by ducnly.vox.com.
Oooh. Well, the obvious repeaters are LOST and Project Runway, though sadly the new season of the latter is almost over. Thankfully Bravo replays it to death so I'm pretty much caught up there. LOST starts up again next week, with a 'recap' episode due this week. We also like Deal or No Deal a lot, but not to the point of watching it religiously or anything, but given that it doesn't have a "plot," that's understandable. Law and Order: SVU is much the same, as we can catch it on repeats as well as when the new ones are on.
Our newest venture is Kidnapped, on NBC, but as we're only one episode in, it's hard to tell where it'll go. So far, it looks at least mildly interesting. NBC is also providing Heroes, and who are we to resist more superhero programming? Worth a shot, at least.
That's about all I can think of at the moment~
It's another quiet morning. Quiet with the exception of the fact that the cat's been trying to wake me up for the past two hours because her dish has been empty since last night. Not my fault you ate it all too quickly, cat. I finally let her persuade me out of bed when the alarm started going off. I really would have been happy to hit the sleep button a couple times (like Evan's doing) but the cat on my back, meowing in my ear, insisted otherwise.
Finished the Albion series yesterday at work, though I found that the third book didn't move nearly as quickly as the first two. The major plot arc was introduced really early but didn't conclude until the very end of the book, whereas the other books had several arcs that kept things moving. I ended up reading very quickly just because I was certain that it wouldn't take the whole book just to resolve this one problem. Maybe the author ran out of steam. At any rate, I still don't really have much to complain about aside from that; I really liked the series. I tried to start the new one that just came out by the same author, but it just didn't catch my interest in the same way. I might need to come back to it later, but for the time being I've moved on to something else.
That 'something else' is a book called Special Topics in Calamity Physics, which is an excellent title all on its own, but the book becomes even greater when we look at the table of contents and see that every chapter is also a title--of a well-known play, novel, short story, and the like. I haven't read every story that it alludes to, but I enjoyed trying to relate each chapter to its title when I did. I'm still only about 275 pages is, however, so we'll see where things go from there.
Right now I'm still most impressed with the author's excellent descriptions and turns of phrase that just absolutely resonate with me. There's one early on that I just kind of stared at for a few minutes, and chuckled about.
Later that day, as Fate would have it, I had my "Greek and Roman Epic" lecture with Professor of the Humanities, Emeritus, Zolo Kydd. Students called Zolo "Rolo," because, if only in stature and complexion, he happened to resemble that particular chewable chocolate caramel candy. He was short, tan, and round, wore bright plaid Christmas pants regardless of the time of year, and his thick, yeloow-white hair encrusted his shiny freckled forehead as if, ages ago, Hidden Valley Ranch salad dressing had been dribbled all over him."
Something about that just made me stop and stare. It feels familiar, almost like something I might write. That's comforting, of course, to someone who has yet to do any writing of real measure.
I've taken the cover off of Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince that we actually own and put it on this volume to protect it. We have to turn in the actual covers at work in order to help keep track of who has what checked out, though the matter becomes irrelevant on paperbacks. I'm not sure if they don't care if something so inconsequential gets ruined, or what. But at nearly twenty-six dollars, I can't really afford to have this one's pristine creamy cover ruined by my grubby little paws as I grasp at it for story and meaning.
Anyway, there's still something else I want to post about, but I have to get un-lazy and hook up my printer/scanner first. So for now, you get a book post! Life is good, yada yada, work is work, my schedule is at least enough that I'm content with it. And and and the guy I wanted to get kicked off Project Runway did. So! Life is good!
Wow. This is, I think, the longest I've gone without updating here. I'm sorry.
Life has been somewhat hectic of late, and I was out of town for the past two days. So one day quickly becomes two, and two becomes three, and then all of a sudden it's four days since anything's been written. I had a three-day weekend, and we all know how terrible I am at updating when I'm not forcing myself through my morning routine.
Saturday was good. Saturday we got our cable TV hooked up. Apparently there was a mistake over at the cable company and they thought we needed cable internet and already had the TV going, so they scheduled us to have one of their guys come hook it up. I was confused when they told me that we would have to wait for him for the TV, but I figured hey, they know what they're doing and maybe I forgot something. So at 7am on Saturday, I got up to clean house a bit and wait for him. He got here around 9ish, and I made Evan get up as well, so that in case he needed to check the connection in the living room, there wouldn't be a naked man in bed.
The guy was as utterly perplexed as we were that he had to come out for something so apparently simple, and so we hooked up the cable to the TV. The picture was really weak, so he went to his van and cut us some new coaxial cable, but that didn't seem to help either. Our apartment complex has a box outside that the cable guys access, too, so he went to go check that. It turns out that the cable/equipment in there was a little wonky, and that's why our picture was bad. So it ended up being a good thing that he came out, because otherwise our TV wouldn't have worked and we would have had to wait for someone to come out and look at it anyway. So hurrah for things going well when you think they've gone bad.
The rest of Saturday was spent watching the first WVU game of the season--at least, most of it. At some point I found out that there was a Project Runway (squee) marathon on Bravo, and when I was pretty sure we were going to win (we did, 42-10), I turned the channel over to that. PR is one of the shows that I've missed more than most, and I was glad to get caught up with this new season. I'm only a couple episodes behind now that I saw what was on Saturday, and I caught a couple of the earlier episodes that I'd missed yesterday when they did another marathon. I'm counting on Michael, the redheaded chick, and some random person to make it to the final three.
Saturday night I drank, mostly out of boredom. Five shots of vodka (Yes, I was that bored. It's the only alcohol we have in the house) got me nicely tipsy, and lasted for a couple of hours. Evan came home at some point after I'd had the fifth shot (he was out with friends that day), and I actually managed to not be obviously drunk. I'm not sure why I felt like that was the right route--it probably wasn't, in retrospect, but I think mostly my motivation was to see if I could keep him from noticing. I was a little wobbly/silly, but he didn't seem to take much note. I had a little headache on Sunday morning, but nothing a couple of Tylenol didn't take away.
Sunday and Monday we spent at my parents, which is nice enough, I guess. We had a really nice Thanksgiving-type dinner on Sunday night that was very yum, and I have a leftover pumpkin pie in my fridge, which is always good. We forgot to bring the Cool Whip, though. Oh, well. Nothing terribly exciting to say about being home--it's pretty much the same as always. Mooched some food, watched TV, played with Mom's new laptop, and really that's about it. It's weird to finally be allowed to sleep together now, but nice.
Yesterday Mom and I got up early and tried to go to this craft fair that they have nearby every Labor Day weekend, but it wasn't there when we were, so I think it must only be on Saturday and Sunday of the weekend. In lieu of that, we ended up visiting my aunt at our old house in my hometown. That was...blah. My family are those scary uber-conservatives that want to kill/bomb/destroy all Muslims, which pisses me off, but I know better than to open my mouth about it. I'm still disappointed in them.
When we came back here, Evan and I tried a new tactic against the giant pile of dishes we'd accumulated and left behind (heh), and then made a supply run for a few things we needed. I really wanted to get a pair of computer headphones with the little microphone and everything, but unfortunately the only two they had of the pair I wanted had already been opened (And put back on the shelf. Why?). So perhaps next time.
Last night was spent reuniting, if you will, with Tarsis, who got a little screwed over by the leftovers of Hurricane Ernesto. We had a big RP day planned on Saturday, but he'd lost power and didn't get back until I was already at my parents' house. Of course my brain conveniently decided to shut down before we'd really gotten much done, so we saved and will continue later--soon, I hope. Possibly tonight.
I'm working for the next five days, which is blah, but I'm happy to be back on the five-days schedule despite the fact that I know it makes me super-tired. I'll get used to it again, with time. I just hope I'll be able to keep up with everything else I do here, too.
Sorry for the "This is what I did" post, which I usually try to avoid, but a lot happened, and there were quite a few little comments I wanted to make, for one reason or the other. I hope that updates will be a bit closer together from here on out so that giant catch-up posts aren't as necessary.
Until next time~
